Coupes have held special significance for BMW ever since it entered the segment with the acclaimed 2-litre 327 and 328 models in the late 1930s. Over the last 70 years BMW has produced different coupe series, varying greatly in size and style, but bound by common threads of sporty looks and enthusiasm for driving.

The E92, BMW's 2-door coupe exhibits a more aggressive angle in the rear windscreen, giving the car a sleeker profile than the 4-door E90. The hood is slightly longer too adding to the car's dynamic profile. In traditional BMW style, the pumped wheel arches add a touch of purpose, and the short front overhangs hint at the cars dynamic ability. The rear overhang has been extended, which increases boot space to an impressive 440 litres, while the front end of the vehicle reveals a hint of the 6 Series Coupé.

Given the Coupe's economic importance and role-model influence, the E92 underwent development as an entity related to but distinct from the E90 sedan. The two-door body, for instance, is longer, lower and structurally stiffer than the four-door, with which it shares no panels or glass. It introduces plastic front mudguards which, in normal metal manner, are painted and baked while attached to the body. While the nose maintains family resemblance, its headlights, grilles and lower air intake are subtly individual. Similarly, the side surfacing is less pronounced than the sedan's, and more mature rear appearance with beautiful taillights that better fit the 3 Series looks. Frameless door windows continue a BMW Coupe design cue that began in the mid 1950s.

By coupe standards the 3 Series E92 accommodations are about as good as it gets. Notably, the comfortably supportive two-place rear bench that can fold up, so longer objects should be no problem to be carried. Because this is not the primary goal for the back seats, the occupants here have their own climate control and all the comfort they need. There is enough legroom and headroom for those up to 1.9m tall. Up front, the fully bolstered sports-style buckets offer ample (all-electric) adjustments in every direction. These seats sustain their comforting embrace from the moment you settle in until the journey ends, no matter how long and demanding the drive. A pleasing and practical touch: telescopic arms automatically bring the unbuckled front seat belts within easy reach.

Apart from the self-evident integrity, agility and balance of its driving dynamics, the E92 Coupe has a host of safety features and driver aids including ABS, EBD, DSC, DBC, CBC, ASC and DTC. Translated, that's anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, dynamic stability control, dynamic brake control, cornering brake control, automatic stability control and dynamic traction control. Equally importantly, the DTC acknowledges keen drivers by permitting a measure of dry-road wheelspin, and unlike the 3 Series sedan the DSC can be fully disabled at the driver's discretion.
On the passive front, Coupe's safety larder includes dual-stage front and front-side airbags, and curtain bags, plus pre-tensioning and load-limiting belts front and rear.

Top of the range and a well anticipated engine is the 335i, the world's first straight-six with twin turbo technology, incorporating high precision fuel injection, and an all-aluminium crankcase
This forced induction 3.0-litre; straight 6-cylinder engine develops maximum output of 225kW and generates peak torque of 400Nm, where the combination of turbocharging and direct petrol fuel injection makes for solid power down characteristics.
Transmission options for the new rear-wheel drive 3 Series Coupé include the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, and as an option an upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is also available. BMW claims the response time of the automatic transmission on the new BMW 3 Series Coupé is down by approximately 40 per cent compared with a conventional automatic transmission, with shift time being almost halved.

With handling close to impeccable, superb looks and some of the finest and most powerful engines around, BMW’s 3 Series E92 coupe is already a hit.
